Istanbul's Famous Cat Culture

Istanbul is often called the "City of Cats." Hundreds of thousands of street cats roam freely, cared for by locals, shopkeepers, and the municipality. They sleep in shops, ride ferries, and have become an unofficial symbol of the city.

Why So Many Cats?

Islamic culture holds cats in high regard — the Prophet Muhammad was known to be fond of cats. Ottoman tradition encouraged caring for street animals. The city provides food stations, shelters, and veterinary care. Locals regularly feed and look after neighborhood cats.

The Kedi Documentary

The 2016 documentary "Kedi" beautifully captures Istanbul's relationship with its cats and was a global hit. It follows seven different street cats and the people who care for them.

Can I pet the street cats?

Most Istanbul cats are friendly and used to human interaction. Many will come to you for pets. However, as with any street animal, approach gently and let the cat come to you first.
