The Iconic Balık Ekmek

The fish sandwich (balık ekmek) at Eminönü is one of Istanbul's most iconic street food experiences. Fresh grilled mackerel is served in crusty bread with onions, lettuce, and a squeeze of lemon, right by the Galata Bridge waterfront.

Where to Get the Best Fish Sandwich

The floating boat restaurants at the Eminönü waterfront are the classic spot. You will see decorated boats rocking on the water while cooks grill fish on board. The area near the Spice Bazaar exit is the most popular location. A sandwich costs about 80–120 TL.

Tips for the Best Experience

Go for lunch when the fish is freshest. Add plenty of salt and lemon juice. Pair with a pickle juice (şalgam) or a cold ayran. Eat on one of the nearby benches overlooking the Golden Horn for the full Istanbul experience.

Is the fish sandwich worth trying?

Absolutely — it is a must-try Istanbul experience. The combination of fresh fish, crusty bread, and waterfront atmosphere is unforgettable.

Balik ekmek at Eminonu is an iconic Istanbul experience! The boats rocking on the water while they grill the fish, the fresh bread, onions, lettuce, and a squeeze of lemon - perfection. Costs about 100-150 TL. Eat it by the waterfront for the full experience.

The boat restaurants at Eminonu are touristy but still good. For a more local experience, try the fish market in Karakoy or the restaurants under Galata Bridge. The fish is freshest in autumn and winter seasons.
