Getting a Taxi in Istanbul
Istanbul taxis are yellow and metered. While you can hail them on the street, using an app is recommended to avoid common tourist scams like rigged meters or long routes. The two main apps are Uber and BiTaksi.
Uber in Istanbul
Uber operates in Istanbul but only with licensed yellow taxis (not private cars). The advantage is upfront pricing, GPS-tracked routes, and cashless payment. Surge pricing can apply during peak hours.
BiTaksi
BiTaksi is Turkey's homegrown taxi app and more widely used than Uber among locals. It connects to Istanbul's official taxi fleet. Features include fare estimation, driver ratings, and both cash and card payment.
Which app is better?
BiTaksi has more available taxis and is more reliable for hailing a cab quickly. Uber offers better upfront pricing transparency. Having both apps installed is the smartest approach.
How to avoid taxi scams?
Always use an app or ask your hotel to call a taxi. Insist on the meter. Check that the meter starts at the base fare (about 35 TL). Use Google Maps to follow the route.
