Underground Cities in Cappadocia

Cappadocia has over 200 underground cities, with Derinkuyu and Kaymakli being the most visited. These ancient cities go 8+ levels deep and once housed thousands of people. They are fascinating historical sites but the narrow passages concern some visitors.

What to Expect Inside

The passages vary in size. Main corridors are about 1.6m (5.3 ft) high in some sections, requiring you to duck. Some tunnels are narrow โ€” about 70cm (2.3 ft) wide. However, the main tourist paths are well-lit with electric lighting and ventilation.

Tips for Claustrophobic Visitors

Visit Kaymakli first โ€” it has wider passages than Derinkuyu. Go early morning when there are fewer people. Stay on the main tourist route which has the widest corridors. You can always turn back at any point. Most visitors who are mildly claustrophobic manage fine.

How deep do the underground cities go?

Derinkuyu extends 8 levels deep (about 60 meters). Tourists typically visit 4โ€“5 levels. Kaymakli has 4 open levels for visitors.

Derinkuyu goes 8 levels deep and housed up to 20,000 people historically. Some passages are quite narrow and low. If you are mildly claustrophobic, Kaymakli might be better as it is wider. The deepest levels are the tightest so you can always turn back.

I am slightly claustrophobic and managed Kaymakli fine but struggled at Derinkuyu. The ventilation shafts actually bring fresh air so it does not feel stuffy. The historical significance makes it worth pushing through if you can.
