Two weeks in Turkey is enough for the classic loop: Istanbul, the rock valleys of Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale on the Aegean side, and several days on the Lycian coast around Kaş (Kas) or Fethiye. This plan uses two domestic flights and a mix of trains and buses, and it includes a slower coast variant if you would rather swap sightseeing for swimming.
Quick facts
- Where: Istanbul → Cappadocia → Selçuk/Ephesus → Pamukkale → Kaş or Fethiye → fly home from Dalaman or Antalya.
- Getting there: Fly into Istanbul. Leave from Dalaman or Antalya, or take a short flight back to Istanbul.
- Time needed: 14 nights. You can't do it in less without cutting a region.
- Cost: Mid-range overall. Most ancient sites are ticketed, mosques are usually free to enter, and long legs by bus cost less than flying.
- Best time: Spring and autumn. Barbaros Yachting gives the coastal season as May to October and calls June and September the best balance of weather and crowds.
- Good for: First-time visitors who want history, landscape and beach in one trip.
The classic route, day by day
Days 1–4: Istanbul. The historic peninsula has been on UNESCO's list since 1985. Use Day 1 for Sultanahmet: the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. On Day 2 visit Topkapı Palace in the morning and the Grand Bazaar in the afternoon, then take a ferry across the Bosphorus in the evening. On Day 3 walk Karaköy, Galata and Beyoğlu. On Day 4 cross to Kadıköy on the Asian side, or take a Bosphorus cruise. Our Istanbul 3-day itinerary has the walking routes. Mosques close to visitors at prayer times, so dress modestly and carry a scarf.
Day 5: Fly to Cappadocia. Turkish Airlines flies direct from Istanbul Airport to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV), about 30 km from Nevşehir. Kayseri (ASR), about 83 km away, is the other gateway. Spend the afternoon on an easy valley walk and catch sunset from a viewpoint. For the overnight-bus and train options, see Istanbul to Cappadocia transport.
Days 6–7: Cappadocia. The Göreme National Park and Rock Sites of Cappadocia were inscribed by UNESCO in 1985. If you want a balloon flight, try for it on the morning of Day 6 and keep Day 7 as a backup. The civil aviation authority (SHGM) decides each day whether flights can go, and wind, fog or rain cancel them. Spend the rest of the time at the Göreme Open-Air Museum, an underground city and the valley hikes. Our 3-day Cappadocia itinerary breaks these down by morning and afternoon.
Day 8: Fly to İzmir, continue to Selçuk. Pegasus and SunExpress have run nonstop Kayseri–İzmir flights on some days of the week. Otherwise you connect via Istanbul. Compare options in our domestic flights guide. From İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport, take the İZBAN commuter train south and change for the regional train to Selçuk. Turkey Travel Planner puts the trip from İzmir at roughly three hours. A taxi or a pre-booked transfer is quicker.
Day 9: Ephesus. Ephesus became a UNESCO site in 2015. The listing includes the ancient city, Ayasuluk Hill (with the Basilica of St John and the İsa Bey Mosque) and the Çukuriçi mound. Enter at the upper gate and walk downhill to the lower gate. Allow two to three hours, plus about 45 minutes for the separately ticketed Terrace Houses. In the afternoon, go to Şirince, a village 8 km east of Selçuk known for its fruit wines. Minibuses leave from Selçuk otogar. See our Ephesus guide.
Day 10: Train to Denizli, then Pamukkale. Regional trains run from İzmir towards Denizli, and some services need a change at Nazilli. Check the current timetable for a train that stops at Selçuk. Pamukkale is about 16 km from Denizli by road, and minibuses and taxis cover that stretch. Visit the travertines and Hierapolis (UNESCO, 1988) in the late afternoon, when the white terraces are cooler and the light is softer. The Antique Pool is extra. See Pamukkale and Hierapolis.
Day 11: Bus to the coast. Intercity buses connect Denizli with Fethiye. Wikivoyage names Pamukkale and Flixbus among the long-distance operators on the coast road. Break the trip in Fethiye, or carry on to Kalkan or Kaş.
Days 12–13: Kaş or Kalkan. Kaş is about 110 km from Dalaman Airport. Spend one day on a boat trip or a swim at Kaputaş beach. Spend the other walking a section of the Lycian Way, diving, or crossing to the Greek island of Meis (Kastellorizo), about 20 minutes away by boat. Bring your passport for the crossing. See Kaş and Kalkan.
Day 14: Fly out. Dalaman is the closer airport for Kalkan, roughly 90 minutes to two hours by road. Antalya also works if you take a dolmuş or bus east via Demre and Finike.
The slower coast variant
If two flights and two travel days in a row sound like too much, drop Pamukkale and give the coast five nights:
- Days 1–4: Istanbul as above.
- Days 5–7: Cappadocia.
- Day 8: Fly to Dalaman. You will probably connect in Istanbul.
- Days 9–10: Fethiye or Ölüdeniz. Take a boat day and visit the Lycian rock tombs.
- Day 11: Take a bus along the D400 coast road to Kalkan, stopping at Patara beach, about 20 km west of Kalkan.
- Days 12–14: Kaş, with boat trips, swimming and an easy Lycian Way walk.
Another option is a three- or four-night gulet cabin cruise from Fethiye or Göcek. Barbaros Yachting describes routes out of these ports through the Twelve Islands and along the Lycian coast as far as Kekova. Ephesus can be added later as a day trip from Kuşadası, or saved for another visit.
Transport tips between stops
- Book the flights first. The Istanbul–Cappadocia and Cappadocia–Aegean flights shape the whole plan.
- Pack light. Regional trains and coastal buses have limited luggage space, and minibuses have even less.
- Don't plan sightseeing on the morning of a balloon flight. Pickups are before dawn, and a cancelled flight may move to the next day.
- Consider a car for the coast. It makes beaches and small ruins easier to reach. A car is not worth it in Istanbul.
FAQ
Is two weeks enough for Turkey?
Two weeks covers Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, Pamukkale and part of the Lycian coast at a steady pace. The southeast and the Black Sea need more time. See the 3-week itinerary.
Should I fly or take the bus from Istanbul to Cappadocia?
Flying to Nevşehir or Kayseri is the fastest option. An overnight bus saves a hotel night, but you arrive tired. The transport guide compares both.
Can I do Ephesus and Pamukkale on the same day?
It is possible, but it makes for a rushed day. This itinerary gives each a separate day and moves between them by regional train.
Which airport is best for flying home from the coast?
Dalaman is closest to Fethiye, Kalkan and Kaş. Antalya has more international flights but is farther from Kalkan.
What is the best month for this route?
Late April to early June, and September to October. Inland Cappadocia is cold in winter, while the coast is very hot in July and August.
